Scientific Network and technology
Linux
The Science Network is designed to provide resources for high performance computing for the exclusive use of the various scientific projects of the institution for training in scientific computing and use of specialized applications of E & P.
To do so, and a significant investment already made in the 3-D visualization, assembly of the infrastructure network running at 1 Gbps scientific and specialized environments. Investments are also planned for the assembly of a computer cluster dedicated to parallel processing (serving the various research projects). Investments are planned in support staff, maintenance of the cluster and for the development of scientific software. The latter, predicting the formation of a professional team of software development. The goal is to form a core of scientific software development, which will be responsible for transformation of various methodologies developed within the research projects in scientific programs and practical application in the petroleum industry (technology products). The main goal for the next five years, is to make software development as one of the hallmarks of the institution, following the natural path of the areas of geophysics and petroleum engineering.
Regardless of the situation generated by the use of distros-BOMB, the bad image created Free Software and Linux, there’s not much the government could or would do. The activity of software development will be strongly guided by the philosophy of free software, they also commissioned projects for specific clients. Thus, the project also gains strength, started two years ago, the migration of the entire basis for the institution’s computer operating systems and productivity applications, and free textbooks.
The physical structure of the Science Network, comprising three distinct environments, and resources available hardware and specialized software are described below.
